Free Activities in Telluride

When you visit Telluride, Colorado, you don't have to load up your schedule with expensive activities. Some of the best things to do in Telluride are free! When we survey guests about their favorite things in the area, the two biggest draws are the beautiful scenery and the free Telluride to Mountain Village gondola. Beyond the beautiful scenery and gondola rides, many organizations in town bring in complimentary entertainment and other programming year round. Free Gondola Ride
For a bird’s eye view, take a ride on the free gondola that connects the town of Telluride with Mountain Village. From the bottom of Oak Street, the gondola climbs to the San Sophia Station at 10,535 feet before descending to Mountain Village. The gondola runs from the week of Memorial Day to Mid October during the summer season and the week of Thanksgiving until early April in the winter from 7am to midnight. Riders in the early morning and at dusk can often spot wild life below. Rides after dark are a special treat with both towns shining like jewels.

Scenery and Outdoor Activities
Telluride is located in the San Juan Mountains and is surrounded by spectacular 13,000 and 14,000 foot peaks. The San Miguel River dramatically plunges into the box canyon at Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado's largest waterfall, and runs through town and to the valley floor. Enjoy the stunning scenery by walking around Telluride and Mountain Village, hiking the many area trails, biking on the variety of paths or cross country skiing in the winter.

Historic Walking Tour
Take a self-guided walking tour through Telluride to get a feel for the rich history of this mountain town. Telluride is just 12 blocks long and 8 blocks wide, and with no stoplights in sight, it is the perfect town to walk around and take in the architecture, beautiful gardens, and stunning sights. Start at the Telluride Historical Museum and then set off on a journey through town. You'll find placards outside the historic homes, documenting their role in the history of the town.

Guided Mountain Tour
In the winter, the Telluride Ski Ambassadors lead daily ski area tours that focuses on Telluride's history as well as interesting facts about the surrounding mountains and environment. As long as you have a lift ticket, this is a great free activity and a fun way to learn about Telluride Ski Resort. Tours depart at 10am from the top of the Coonskin Lift.

Fireside Chats
Head to the center of Mountain Village, gather round to listen to a variety of Telluride locals tell stories about talk about Telluride's rich history. You'll hear writers, historians, and the like talk about the many stories that make Telluride so unique. The free Fireside Chats are sponsored by the Telluride historical museum.

Walk the River Trail
This in-town trail meanders along the San Miguel River and is a great way to take in the sites surrounding Telluride. Peaceful and quiet, the River Trail is a favorite among locals and visitors.

Ride the Town Loop Bus
This free bus provided by the Town of Telluride circles all around town, stopping at various locations along the way. Otherwise known as the Galloping Goose, this bus runs from 7am to midnight. Hop on it to get to a restaurant, your lodging, or the Post Office, or just ride it around to get a feel for the town of Telluride!
