Blind Pilot originally began as a duo, Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski, but after the instant success of their debut CD "3 Rounds and a Sound," they added four new members (Luke Ydstie, Kati Claborn, Dave Jorgensen, and Ian Krist) and began touring as a sextet with a more textured, broad, and beautiful sound. Their second CD, "We Are the Tide," was also a critical success and the group went on to perform at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and other festivals, as well as on Late Night with David Letterman and Last Call with Carson Daly . Truth and Dare: Finding Meaning in Your Fiction

Award-winning writer and Colorado Mesa University Rhonda Claridge teaches this two-day workshop at the Ah Haa School for the Arts , where students will learn the art of incoporating the elements of real life and true experiences into fiction writing. The class will help guide the writing process: creating composite characters, developing fictional pieces from actual facts, and elucidating the essences of the narrative.  The class will be held at the Ah Haa School for the Arts, from 2-6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, February 24-25. The cost of the workshop is $125 and students can either bring a piece of writing they're working on or start a new piece.

The Art of the Portrait

Capturing the likeness of a subject is a difficult skill to master, but students in this workshop will get the tips to hone their portraiture practice. The class starts with a series of drawing exercises that focus on the face, and participants will learn to see the human visage through line, proportion, and values. The class will then paint a live model, and explore color mixing, application techniques, and composition.  This 3-day class at the Ah Haa School for the Arts is meant for intermediate to advanced level painters, and students can use their medium of choice — watercolor, oil, or acrylic. Local painter Meredith Nemirov is the instructor, and the class is from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday, Feb. 22-24. Tuition is $315.

Historical Snowshoe Tours

Calling all foodies and foragers: This is a special edition of the popular Historical Snowshoe Tours offered by the Telluride Historical Museum. Local naturalists John Sir Jesse and Connie Colter will lead the tour, and teach how to identify winter plants. Strap on the snowshoes, and take a trip into the past and smell, touch, and taste some of the wild foods that sustained Native Americans, early settlers, and explorers in Southwest Colorado. The tours are a joint effort of the Telluride Historical Museum and the Telluride Ski Resort , and they can be booked by calling (970) 728-7433 or online at . Exploring Precious Metal Clay

Learn the basics of silver metal clay at this 3-day workshop presented by the Ah Haa School for the Arts and instructor Christopher Beaver. Students will use this clay-like binding material, which is permeated with microscopic elements of pure metals, to tool and sculpt pendants, earrings, or rings. The finished pieces are fired in a kiln and transformed into solid pieces of metal jewelry. Students will bring home at least one or two of these treasures. This class takes place in the home studio (which is down valley from Telluride) of artist Christopher Beaver. There are three days of sessions: Friday, Feb. 17 from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.; tuition for the class is $275.

Photographing Beyond Barriers: A Visual Exploration

Photographer Deborah Sussex teaches her students to move past the barriers that can hinder creativity: fear of failure or how your work will be received, distractions, preconceptions, familiar subject matter. This three-day workshop at the Ah Haa School for the Arts will focus on vision and expression, and students will learn to contemplate why something catches their eye and how to convey what they observe. Each day will begin with a short demonstration of a particular concept, followed by a hands-on exercise. Images will be downloaded for a group discussion. Fine-tune your pottery craft at this four-week series at the Ah Haa School for the Arts with professional ceramic artist Goedele Vanhille. This class is intended for people with some ceramic experience, and students will learn intermediate and advanced wheel-throwing techniques. Budding ceramicists will be taught to make larger vessels, lids and handles, and how to make thinner ceramic walls.  The class takes place on Monday evenings from 5:30–8:30 p.m. and the cost is $250.
